Student Travel Scheme Online Application

The online form is for applications for a Personalised Octopus with “Student Status” or application for Activation/Renewal of “Student Status”. However, online applications cannot be accepted for replacement of an Octopus due to loss, damage or change of personal particulars.

Eligibility
An applicant for a Personalised Octopus must be a student under the following definitions:
“Student” refers to any person between the ages of 12 and 25 who is currently enrolled in a full-time day course offered by an acceptable institution in Hong Kong. Students who have not yet reached 26 may apply. An applicant’s age is determined by the time at which the application is submitted.
“Full-time day course” refers to a day-time course, which normally requires the participant to attend an acceptable local institution for not less than 20 hours of academic instruction each week for 30 weeks or more in an academic year.
“Acceptable institution” refers to:






schools referred to in Section 2 of the Education Ordinance (Cap279);
registered schools that fall under Section 3 of the Education Ordinance (Cap279);
schools exempted from the Education Ordinance (Cap279) under sections 9(1)(a) and (1)(b);
the word school is defined in Section 3 of the Education Ordinance (Cap279);
other schools as occasionally approved by the MTR Corporation;
private schools offering non-formal curriculum registered under the Education Ordinance (Cap279) are not included.

Payment Method
The application fee is payable at the time the application is made online by using a credit card (VISA, MasterCard or American Express Card). The payment will be processed by PayPal. If you have any enquiries, please contact PayPal on 3550-8574. Your application will only be processed by MTR Corporation Limited after you have completed your online payment and received the payment confirmation.
Alternatively, applicants may pay the application fee at any MTR Customer Service Centres (except Airport Express stations, Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau, Racecourse, Disneyland Resort, Sunny Bay, Wong Chuk Hang, Lei Tung and South Horizons stations). When you receive the ‘Application Fee Payment Notification’ after you uploaded the online application, please print the Notification on A4 sized white paper and bring the Notification to any MTR Customer Service Centre (except Airport Express stations, Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau, Racecourse, Disneyland Resort, Sunny Bay, Wong Chuk Hang, Lei Tung and South Horizons stations) to pay the application fee. Your application will only be processed by MTR Corporation Limited after you have paid the fee. The application will be cancelled if you fail to pay the application fee within 7 days of the letter date of the Notification.
The application fee for a Personalised Octopus with “Student Status” is HK$90. The application fee includes the Octopus deposit of HK$50; a non-refundable fee of HK$20 charged by MTR Corporation Limited for administering the MTR Student Travel Scheme and a non-refundable service charge of HK$20 payable to Octopus Cards Limited. First time applicants, will receive a rebate of the service charge paid to Octopus Cards Limited in the form of HK$20 usable value encoded on their Personalised Octopus. If your Personalised Octopus is returned to the Card Company at any time, the Card Company is entitled to deduct HK$10 or such amount at its absolute discretion from the Octopus deposit to cover the Personalised Octopus cost.
The application fee for Activation/Renewal of “Student Status” is HK$20.

New Octopus Collection
After you have paid the application fee on or before 14 Oct 2017 and the application is approved, the ‘Personalised Octopus with “Student Status” Collection Notification Letter’ will be issued to your address by mail one month after the payment of application fee. Please bring the ‘Notification Letter’ with your valid Student Identity Card/Student Handbook (Academic Year 2017/2018) to the designated counter in the station where you chose to pick up your new Octopus.

Activation/Renewal of “Student Status”
After you have paid the application fee according to the payment date below and the application is approved, the ‘Activation/Renewal of “Student Status” Notification Letter’ will be sent to your address by mail one week before the indicated Activation/Renewal Date shown below. Please bring the ‘Notification Letter’ to your school for endorsement and bring the Notification Letter with endorsement and your Personalised Octopus to Activate/Renew your “Student Status” at any MTR Customer Service Centre (except Airport Express stations, Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau, Racecourse, Disneyland Resort, Sunny Bay, Wong Chuk Hang, Lei Tung and South Horizons stations).

Purchase of a Temporary Student Octopus
Application Fee paid by Online Payment : When your online application is successfully submitted, you are requested to save and print it out on A4 sized white paper and take the ‘Document for Purchase of a Temporary Student Octopus’ to your school for endorsement and then bring it to any MTR Customer Service Centre (except Airport Express stations, Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau, Racecourse, Disneyland Resort, Sunny Bay, Wong Chuk Hang, Lei Tung and South Horizons stations) as proof of your “Student Status” to purchase a ‘Temporary Student Octopus’.
Application Fee to be paid at MTR Customer Service Centre : When your online application is successfully submitted, you are requested to save and print it out on A4 sized white paper and take the ‘Document for Purchase of a Temporary Student Octopus’ to your school for endorsement and then bring it to any MTR Customer Service Centre (except Airport Express stations, Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau, Racecourse, Disneyland Resort, Sunny Bay, Wong Chuk Hang, Lei Tung and South Horizons stations) as proof of your “Student Status” to purchase a ‘Temporary Student Octopus’. You may also bring the Document within 60 days from the date of issue and the application fee payment receipt issued by the MTR to any MTR Customer Service Centre (except Airport Express stations, Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau, Racecourse, Disneyland Resort, Sunny Bay, Wong Chuk Hang, Lei Tung and South Horizons stations) to purchase a ‘Temporary Student Octopus’.
The purchase fee for the ‘Temporary Student Octopus’ is HK$70 which includes the Octopus deposit of HK$50 and HK$20 usable value. The ‘Temporary Student Octopus’ can be returned/refunded when your Personalised Octopus is collected or the “Student Status” on your Personalised Octopus is Activated/Renewed. Any ‘Temporary Student Octopus’ that is lost will not be replaced.
Please remember that you must carry the ‘Application for MTR Student Travel Scheme Confirmation Letter’ or ‘Application Fee Payment Notification’, the ‘Temporary Student Octopus’ receipt and a valid Student Identity Card (Academic Year 2017/2018) at all times when you use a ‘Temporary Student Octopus’ to travel in the MTR during the processing period. Failure to carry the ‘Temporary Student Octopus’ receipt could result in the imposition of a surcharge if your ‘Temporary Student Octopus’ is inspected at any time.
The ‘Document for Purchase of a Temporary Student Octopus’ serves as proof of your student status for the purchase of a ‘Temporary Student Octopus’ and is valid for 60 days from the date of issue.
If your application is rejected, and you have purchased a “Temporary Student Octopus”, you should immediately stop using it and go to any MTR Customer Service Centre (except Airport Express stations, Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau, Racecourse, Disneyland Resort, Sunny Bay, Wong Chuk Hang, Lei Tung and South Horizons stations) to obtain a refund for the “Temporary Student Octopus”. If you continue using a “Temporary Student Octopus” to travel, it could result in the imposition of a surcharge and/or prosecution.

Students Under 18 Years of Age
If you are below 18 years of age, your parent or legal guardian must agree to the “Notes for Parent or Legal Guardian of the MTR Student Travel Scheme Applicant” and provide the relevant personal information for purposes of processing the application.

Special School Subject to the curriculum For curriculum similar to the ‘Class’ listed above, the validity granted will be the same as the associated class, but will not be earlier than 31 October 2020 (whichever validity is longer). For other classes/curricula, the expiry date is 31 October 2020.

Report loss of Personalised Octopus with “Student Status”
If your Octopus is lost or stolen, you must report it immediately to the Card Company by calling the Lost Octopus Reporting Hotline on 2266 2266. You may ask for a replacement Octopus to be issued.

If you want to continue to enjoy concessionary fares while waiting for the replacement Octopus, you must go to any MTR Customer Service Centre (Except Airport Express stations, Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau, Racecourse, Disneyland Resort, Sunny Bay, Wong Chuk Hang, Lei Tung and South Horizons stations) to purchase a ‘Temporary Student Octopus’ and obtain temporary proof of your “Student Status”. Whenever you are travelling on the MTR with a ‘Temporary Student Octopus’, the temporary proof of “Student Status” and a Student Identity Card (valid for the Academic Year 2017/2018) must also be carried at all times, until the replacement Personalised Octopus with “Student Status” has been issued.

Termination of studies / Change in personal data
If you cease to be a full-time day course student, your “Student Status” becomes invalid. You must immediately contact the MTR Hotline on 2881 8888.
